The legendary Ruta Nacional 40 (RN40) that runs from Argentina’s border with Bolivia to Rio Gallegos in the south of Patagonia on a doorstep of the Tierra del Fuego Province is the principal artery of the country‘s outback, despite much of it being the rough “ripio,” an unpaved gravel road. Though it may be the most direct route between Salta and Mendoza, it may not be the most ideal, nor provides for a complete experience of the great northwest to the middle Cuyo region passage.
While a short, rewarding climb to the top of Cerro San Bernardo east of Salta Centro (featured image), cycling without bags, offers the experience of the incredible lightness of being, beautiful views of the city, and the roadside vegetation is lush, it’s best to know before you head out what to expect and what are your route choices as you proceed south along the arid foothills of the Andes.
