So I thought to get away for a few days in the best season of the year in Colorado – second half of September. Never a disappointment. The weather is that good – dry, sky blue and cloudless, there is no wind – and colors are so vivid. It doesn’t get any better than this, anywhere. The only downside: too many RVs and caravans on the road; the key is to cycle somewhere where they can’t go or don’t go. One of those places is Colorado National Monument. They come here, but in their passenger cars that they toe behind their caravans; fortunately they leave their caravans in RV campgrounds in Grand Junction or Fruita.
A popular loop to ride from Fruita or Grand Junction through the Colorado National Monument and back to starting point via foothills highway #340 is 63 km long, with elevation gain just under 1,000 meters.
