One of the capitals of Jayavarman II, Banteay Chhmar was dedicated to his sons and generals killed during the Cham invasion of 1177. Constructed of sandstone, the temple city was built between the 11th to 13th centuries, however, little remains of the city at large. The temple, constituting the center point of the once grand city is dedicated to Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Although Banteay Chhmar suffered during repeated Thai invasions, its huge bas-reliefs remain and are considered superb and in execution and detail rival those of the Bayon temple and Angkor Wat. Continue to Banteay Torp temple, located south of Banteay Chhmar another sandstone temple with five towers, have lunch on site before returning back to Battambang for overnight.

Next ride Bamboo Train, aka Lorry back to Battambang. Upon return stroll through the town to discover its beautiful Colonial architecture.
