COSTA RICA - PANAMA 21 D / 20 N

 

Day 1: Guatemala City
Arrival at the Guatemala City airport. Transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Guatemala City .

Day 2: Guatemala City – Antigua
Transfer to Antigua, the earlier colonial capital of Central America, founded in 1543. We will visit the Main Square, the Cathedral and other buildings and colonial sites. Overnight.


Day 3: Antigua – Chichi – Lake Atitlan - Guatemala
Departure to the highlands to visit Chichi. Tour through the open-air market (only Thursdays & Sundays), where colorful handicrafts of the region are for sale. Enter the 400-year-old church of Santo Tomás, where catholic and pagan rites take place in a mystical atmosphere. We continue to Lake Atitlan, Panajachel and Guatemala city . Overnight in Guatemala .


Day 4: Ciudad de Guatemala - Copán/Honduras.
Drive through the Motagua valley towards Honduras. En route we will pass through the states of El Progreso and Zacapa in Guatemala; stop at the villages Almolonga and Zunil known for their colorful vegetable and flower markets. After customs formalities transfer to Copán. Overnight.


Day 5: Archaeological Park of Copán
Today we visit the legendary Archaeological Park of Copán. Enjoy the impressive 63-step stairway with over 2,500 hieroglyphs and masterfully carved Stella. In the afternoon will visit Las Sepulturas, a residential and burial site of the Mayan nobles. Overnight in Copán.



Day 6: Copán – Lake Yojoa
Transfer to the Yojoa Lake, a birdwatchers paradise! About 400 of the 700 species registered in Honduras can be found around this lake. We visit the impressive Pulhapanzak Waterfall before reaching our hotel at the lake.


Day 7: Lake Yojoa – Tegucigalpa
After breakfast transfer to Tegucigalpa, driving through some of the most fascinating landscapes in Honduras. On the way we will visit Comayagua with its colonial heritage. Overnight in Tegucigalpa .


Day 8: Tegucigalpa – Valle de Angeles
Before we will visit the Valle de Angeles, where we visit the famous National Handicraft Centre, we tour the Honduran capital. We return in the late afternoon. Overnight in Tegucigalpa .


Day 9: Tegucigalpa – León
We cross the border to Nicaragua. After an interesting drive we reach León in the afternoon. Overnight in León.


Day 10: León – Managua
We tour León, the ancient capital of Nicaragua and then continue to the capital, Managua. Overnight.


Day 11: Masaya Volcano – Granada
City tour in Granada visiting the colonial buildings. In the afternoon we go on to the well-known national park of Vulcano Masaya. Overnight in Granada.


Day 12: Granada – Island Ometepe

After breakfast boat transfer to Ometepe Island. Ometepe is an incredible island located in the Lake Nicaragua. It is formed by two volcanoes - Concepcion and Maderas. The Concepcion is a dormant volcano and the Maderas is extinct and covered by a deep cloud forest. Overnight on Ometepe Island .


Day 13: Ometepe-Rincon de la Vieja, Costa Rica.
Return to the mainland and continue to the Border with Costa Rica, passing the picturesque Liberia to Rincón de la Vieja. Lodging.


Day 14 Montenverde cloud forest biological reserve
Early morning, visit of Rincón de la Vieja, an active volcano (1.895m/6.200 feet). Visit "Las Pailas", an area with intense volcanic activity with boiling mud pools, steamy cones and sulfur gases. In "Azufrales", enjoy small pools with hot springs and also a site with refreshing waterfalls. Departure to Monteverde.

Day 15: Monteverde Parque Nacional
A 10.000 ha. (24.710 acres) Private Reserve, always cold and humid thanks to the rain clouda coming from the Caribbean, Momnteverde is an exuberant forest area with trees covered in moss and ferns that protect the home of different exotic frogs and the resplendent quetzal (one of the 400 species of birds to be found here).
Lodging: Hotel Finca Valverde's or similar


Day 16: Monteverde National Park - Manuel Antonio National park
Transfer to Manuel Antonio National park. Stop at the Carara Transition Forest National Park, a transitional zone between the dry North Pacific and the humid South Coast; possibility to see parrots, partridges, toucans, flycatchers, humming birds, howler monkeys, coatis, sloths and armadillos. Continue to Manuel Antonio. Lodging: Hotel Villa Teca or similar


Day 17: Manuel Antonio National Park - Piedras Blancas.
Early morning excursion to the rain forest, then continue to Piedras Blancas. Lodging


Day 18: Piedras Blancas - Panama City/Panama
Transfer to David city in Panamá. Flight to Panamá City and transfer to your hotel. Lodging: Hotel Continental or similar


Day 19: Panama City

Breakfast. Depart from your hotel to visit Panama Viejo, the first city founded on the isthmus by the Spanish at the beginning of colonization. The remaining ruins are the vestiges of the city left by Pirate Henry Morgan, who sacked the town in 1671. Visit to the Panama Canal, one of the 20th century's most important engineering feats. At the Miraflores Locks you will also have the opportunity to observe the locks functioning as giant cargo ships are raised and lowered. Next view the Canal from the scenic Amador Causeway.


Day 20: Panama City - Barro Colorado

The adventure begins at 6:30 AM with a car ride through a tropical rainforest to the small town of Gamboa where a boat awaits us to tour the canal region. We will cruise along Gatun Lake to the “ Gigante Peninsula ” and to the Barro Colorado Natural Monument (BCNM), administered by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute since 1946 and considered the best-protected and most studied tropical rainforest in the world. Return and lodging in Panamá City.


Day 21: Panama City: Transfer Hotel – Airport.

Day 1: Guatemala City
Arrival at the Guatemala City airport. Transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Guatemala City.

Day 2: Guatemala City – Antigua

Breakfast. Transfer to El Salvador Border and continue to San Salvador city. Lodging In San Salvador.

Day 05 SAN SALVADOR-SUCHITOTO-SAN SALVADOR
Breakfast. Departure to visit the capital of El Salvador, tour of the city. Continue to Suchitoto, a colonial city located 44 kilometers from the capital, a pictoresque town with wonderful views of the Suchitlan Lake. Lunch. Afternoon return to San Salvador and lodging.

DAY 06. SAN SALVADOR-JOYAS DE CEREN-SAN ANDRES-SAN SALVADOR
Breakfast. Visit one of the most important pre-Columbian settlements, Joys de Ceren, which was buried under the ashes of volcano Caldera's eruption about 1400 years ago; tour adobe of the period, with kitchens, ceramics of mud which contain petrified beans, obsidian and jade knifes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next visit the San Andres ruins and the picturesque lake Coatepeque. Lunch and afternoon return to San Salvador and lodging.

DAY 07 SAN SALVADOR- (NICARAGUA)
Breakfast. Departure to the Airport for your flight to Managua, Nicaragua. Transfer to selected Hotel in Managua; city tour: visit the old cathedral, National Palace of Culture, National Museum, Ruben Dario National Theatre, Xolotlan or Lake Managua and the archaeological museum Huellas de Acahualinca. Lodging.

DAY 08: MANAGUA- GRANADA-ISLETAS
Transfer to Granada. Boat of Lake Cocibolca (or Nicaragua Lake ), past some its 356 small islands that that form natural canals of great beauty. A walk thru the Historic centre of Granada. Overnight in Granada.

Day 09 MOMBACHO VOLCANO-CATARINA-GRANADA
Today visit the Mombacho National Park, then the town of Catarina with the stunning panorama of Laguna Apoyo. Overnight in Granada.

DAY 10: Free day in Granada. Lodging.

DAY 11. GRANADA-PEÑAS BLANCAS BORDER-MONTEVERDE (COSTA RICA)
Breakfast. Departure to Costa Rica border, passing the shores of Lake Cocibolca with great views of the volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas on Ometepe Island. Enter Costa Rica and continue to Montverde, an important cloud forest biological reserve. Lodging. In the afternoon a specialized guide will take us to observe some of the 300 species of migratory birds residing in the region. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 12 MONTEVERDE-SAN JOSE
Breakfast. Free at your own leisure to take a canopy tour or go horseback riding. After lunch we will continue our trip arriving at San José, capital of Costa Rica, where we will lodge.

DAY 13 SAN JOSE
Breakfast. Depart for a city tour - the National Theater, the Jade Museum (houses interesting pre-Columbian objects as well as contemporary art works), the Metallic Building, the National Assembly, the Supreme Court, the Justice Tribunals, finishing our trip with a visit to the handicrafts market. Afternoon free.

DAY 14 SAN JOSE-VOLCAN POAS-GRECIA-SARCHI-SAN JOSE
Tour to the Volcano Poas National Park, then on to the traditional towns of Grecian and Sarchi. You will visit the old metallic church of Grecia, visit the most important handicrafts centers in Costa Rica. Return to San Jose and lodging.

DAY 15 SAN JOSE-PANAMA
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Panama. Reception and transfer to your hotel.

DAY 16 Panamá City tour and Canal
Breakfast. Depart from your hotel to visit Panama Viejo, the first city founded on the isthmus by the Spanish at the beginning of colonization. The remaining ruins are the vestiges of the city left by Pirate Henry Morgan, who sacked the town in 1671. Visit to the Panama Canal, one of the 20th century's most important engineering feats. Breakfast. Free day for shopping or optional excursions.
