Itinerary:
DAY 01:
Arrive in Aswan then transfer to your
Nile Cruise - accommodation on board Nile Cruise
with full board. Lunch on board then visit
Philae temple
- Philae
Temple was dismantled and reassembled on Agilika lsland about 500m from its original home on Philae Island in the wake of the High Dam.
The temple, dedicated to the goddess lsis, is in a
beautiful setting which has been landscaped to match
its original site. Its various shrines and
sanctuaries, which include a temple of Hathor, a
Birth House and two pylons, celebrate all the
deities involved in the lsis and Osiris myth. The world-famous High Dam was an engineering
miracle when it was built in the 1960s. Today it
provides irrigation and electricity for the whole of
Egypt and together with the old Aswan Dam, 6 km
downriver, wonderful views of the Unfinished
Obelisk. Much of the red granite used for ancient
temples and colossi came from quarries in the Aswan
area. The Unfinished Obelisk still lies where a
crack was discovered as it was being hewn from the
rock. Possibly intended as a companion to the
Lateran obelisk, originally at Karnak, now in Rome,
it would have measured 120-feet and weighed over
1150 tons when completed. The site has recently been
renovated and equipped with tourist facilities.
Nearby is the Fatimide cemetery, hundreds of
mud-brick tombs dating back to the 9th Century AD.
Lunch; Nubian folklor show with dinner.
Overnight in Aswan.
DAY 03:
Breakfast On Board - Sail to
Kom Ombo, visit the temple of two gods,
Sobek and Haroeris, then visit the
temple of Horus in Edfu. Lunch on board the cruise
ship. Kom
Ombo and Edfu are both easily
accessible from Aswan, by day cruise on a felucca,
or by bus
or taxi. Arriving by boat at the Temple of Haroeris
and Sobek,
near Kom Ombo, is recommended: the magnificent
Ptolemaic temple is in a dramatic setting on high
ground beside the Nile, surrounded by sugarcane
fields. Dedicated jointly to Haroeris, the Good
Doctor, and Sobek, the crocodile god, the temple is
famous for its twin entrances, halls and
sanctuaries. Sculpted wall reliefs include one
showing ancient surgical instruments, bone-saws and
dental tools. Three mummified crocodiles found
nearby are now in the Chapel of Hathor. A tour of
the temple may be combined with a visit to the Darow
Camel Market where camels that have made the trek
from northern Sudan are sold every Tuesday. In trhe
afternoon, visit the Temple of Horus in Edfu. Edfu is a longer
trip (105 km from Aswan) but it houses the
best-preserved cult temple in Egypt, a must for archaeological enthusiasts.
Dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god, it was
built during the reigns of the six Ptolemies. The main
building, which includes a great Hypostyle Hall, was
uncovered by Mariette in the 1860s. There are
numerous reliefs, including a depiction of the Feast
of the Beautiful Meeting, the annual reunion between
Horus and his wife Hathor, and a particularly fine
ceiling relief of the goddess Nut in the New Year
Chapel. The temple, which rivals those at Luxor in
grandeur, also contains a Nilometer, a Court of
Offering and a huge pylon at its entrance. Sail to Esna. Dinner.
Overnight in Esna.
DAY 03:
Breakfast, sail to Luxor; lunch
on board the cruise ship. Afternoon, visit
the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut temple
at Deir El Bahari & the Colossi
of Memnon.
Once a year, on the occasion of the Festival of Opet,
in the second and third month of the flood season, a
solemn procession would transport the sacred barque
of the god from the temple of Karnak to the temple
of Luxor. Dinner, Overnight in
Luxor.
