1000 m above sea level and offering fine views of
eastern Bohemia to the south and Poland to the
north. The region was first settled in the middle
ages but proliferated in 17th and 18th centuries
since which time date many of the area's dominant
Baroque churches. Village house types, the "chalupa",
a characteristic timber chalet, date back as the
early 1800s and today comprise highly sought after
recreational retreats. Declared a protected State
nature reserve of beechen forests, evergreens,
peat-meadows and large variety of rare plants, the
range offers wide array of nature trails suitable
for hiking and mountain biking. Area's romantic inns
