A ride
from Denver leads along a route of grand views of the
Continental Divide, passing Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Arapaho and Roosevelt
National Forests, and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, before arriving at the
gate to the Rocky Mountain National Park, the gem of Colorado's parks.
Established in 1918 this is Colorado's oldest scenic byway from which lead
numerous small roads to high-country lakes,
trailheads, campgrounds, the Moffat Tunnel's east portal, and ghost towns at Hesse and Apex.
Despite the incredible scenery this road brings, it is still only a prelude to
what is to come one you enter the Rocky Mountain National Park and its Trail
Ridge Road. Soaring
to an elevation of 12,183 feet, Trail Ridge Road slices through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, entering a
world of rare alpine beauty. Distant peaks loom in all directions, while
fragrant wildflowers blanket the tundra in mid-summer. This is your opportunity
to catch a glimpse of elk, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife traversing the meadows and
crags. Higher than any paved through-road in the country, this cliff-hugging
highway is as impressive for its engineering as for its stunning vistas. You
can't find a road like this one anywhere outside of Colorado - your chance to
experience the true Rocky Mountain High!
| This is a full-day
trip of up to 8-hours involving many stops to enjoy views and the
