Brazil's Portuguese colonial legacy may not had left the brightest mark in its wake when measured in terms of the brutalities of the slave trade, especially since it was not until 1888 that slavery was in fact at last abolished in Brazil. But when it comes to colonial architecture and church construction, Brazil's baroque era stands unique even compared to that of Europe's. The Colonial Tour of Brazil follows in the footsteps of the Royal Road, the Estrada Real, following it in a way in the opposite direction. Gold and diamonds that made Portuguese rich were hauled along road carved out of mountains and jungle by the slaves to Paraty first and later to Rio de Janeiro. Towns of the highland state of Minas Gerais prospered as the ore and diamonds traveled to the coast to be then sailed to Portugal. Lavish churches and colonial mansions were built in the heyday of the plunder, when slave labor was plentiful and cheap.

Tour the gems of colonial architecture and splendid baroque churches. Travel from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Joao del Rei, Tiradentes on through Congonhas to Ouro Preto and Mariana, on to Bello Horizonte, Diamantina and beyond, to the very heart of Brazil's colonial past, to wonderful small towns of Goias, to Pierenopolis and Goiania and Anapolis, then on to the extreme north of the country, to once rich merchant towns of Alcantara and Sao Luis, the only town in Brazil founded by the French. From the far north east continue southeast to Salvador, the first capital of Brazil and birthplace of Portuguese foothold in Brazil. Last arrive in Paraty, the original terminus of the gold, now an UNESCO heritage town of classical colonial mansions, baroque churches and romantic cobblestone streets.

Come to experience the cultural legacy of Brazil' last 500 years, tracing its past since its discovery by a Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral in the year 1500. Though some may fear a touch of baroque overdose, fans of modernist architecture will find that Oscar Niemeyer's structures can be found in Brazil side by side with the finest of those of baroque. The highlight of the modernist architecture is undeniably that of Brasilia, Brazil's new capital city built in 1950s, which we visit as part of this tour en route to Sao Luis or Goias. But the tour is not about architecture alone, optional tours can be added to national parks and beaches throughout.

Day 12: Brasilia

In the morning commence Brasilia City Tour. Hailed as marvel of futuristic urban planning and architecture Brasilia’s urban design contains two major axis, to where the city layout when viewed from an airplane resembles a body of a bird in flight. Clearly separating business from residential areas, Brasilia is known for masterpieces of Niemeyer's architecture. Tour will visit namely the landmarks of the southern zone, including the National Theater, the Cathedral, Itamaraty Palace, the Square of the Three Powers (Praça dos Três Poderes) surrounded by the Presidential Palace, Supreme Court and the National Congress complex, as well as other sites such as the TV Tower, the Juscelino Kubitschek  Memorial, Embassy Row and more. In the 1950's Brasilia was simply an experimental site for the town designers and today the city is one of the best in Brazil when it comes to infrastructure. On the other hand with growing population and extensive network of slum satellite cities that mushroomed around Brasilia and wide boulevards and avenues often ravaged by wind-swirled trash and the homeless, the architectural dream has somehow lost its old charm, though to Brazilians, as Washington DC to the Americans, the city lures visitors to admire its monumental edifices and symbols of Brazilian democracy. Despite its problems associated with poverty in surrounding slums converging upon the monumental core, Brasilia is worth a visit if for no other reason than that it stands en route to our next destination.

**Optional tour: add two nights in Pirenopolis, a pleasant and scenic small colonial town west of Brasilia in the State of Goias,  surrounded by stunning landscape of waterfalls and gently rolling hills. Once magnificent mansions and splendid churches can be toured in this part ghost town, while stunning vistas of the open sea below the equator are everywhere, a wonderful day trip.
